[It's good that she stopped where she did. Not out of any threat of anything happening to her, but he likes to maintain his distance. He has a certain personal space bubble he likes to maintain and he prefers people out of it.]

You can ask. That doesn't mean I'll agree to it.

I ask if you are willing to do me the honor of escorting me to the ball that is to happen next month.

[She's realistic and knows that he probably won't be keen on attending a party, and therefore does not fear a "no". Thus, she is relaxed while asking this of him.]

Our marriage is not official and in name only, but I thought it to be improper not to ask you.

[It's not the sort of request he was expecting, that's for sure. Not that he's sure what he would've expected, but that's beside the point.]

I have no interest in attending anything of that sort here. There's no reason to. Find someone else to take you.

[...She looks just slightly too happy about that rejection. It wasn't that she disliked Togami, but she also knows that he wouldn't be much fun at a party either.]

[And now she can ask the person she actually had in mind with no sense of impropriety.]

[He can be at least somewhat pleasant, depending on your definition, if there's a reason to be at the party. But fortunately or unfortunately, he's deemed a party in a place like this, where there are very few people worth his time, to be useless.]

[Now that she's done, he's gone back to his own activities, effectively ignoring her question. He's a very polite person, really. But that should answer her question well enough. He doesn't need anything at all from her.]
